Steel Coil Weight Calculator
Quickly calculate steel coil weight using outer/inner diameter or length/width/thickness. Supports carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and more.
Calculate Steel Coil Weight
Choose calculation mode: by coil dimensions (OD/ID) or by unrolled length/width/thickness.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose calculation mode — By outer/inner diameter (coil geometry) or by unrolled length, width and thickness.
- Select material — Pick from carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized, aluminum, copper, or enter custom density.
- Enter dimensions — Fill in OD/ID/width or length/width/thickness as per the selected mode.
- Set quantity — Enter number of coils.
- Click "Calculate" — View weight per coil, total weight, and estimated unrolled length (when using diameter mode).
Steel Coil Weight Calculation Formulas
Method 1: By Outer/Inner Diameter
Calculate coil weight directly from its geometry without knowing the unrolled length.
Weight (kg) = π × (OD² – ID²) × Width × Density ÷ 4,000,000Where OD, ID, Width are in mm; Density in g/cm³. The constant 4,000,000 converts mm³ to cm³ and accounts for π/4.
Method 2: By Length, Width & Thickness
Use when unrolled sheet length is known.
Weight (kg) = Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Length (m) × Density (g/cm³) × 0.001Example: 1000 mm wide, 1 mm thick, 200 m long carbon steel coil = 1000×1×200×7.85×0.001 = 1570 kg.
Length Estimation from Diameters
Length (m) = (OD² – ID²) × 0.7854 ÷ Thickness (mm) ÷ 1000Standard Coil Inner Diameters
Common IDs: 508 mm (20") and 610 mm (24"). The calculator defaults to 508 mm.

ASTM A568/A568M Tolerances
ASTM A568 defines general requirements for steel sheets in coils, including thickness, width, and flatness tolerances for hot-rolled and cold-rolled products.
- Thickness tolerance: Varies by thickness and width; typically ±0.05 mm to ±0.25 mm for cold-rolled strip.
- Width tolerance: ±2 mm to ±6 mm depending on specified width.
- Flatness tolerance: Specified in ASTM A568/A568M; tighter tolerances available for strip products.
- Actual weight may vary ±3-5% due to mill tolerances and density variations.
Carbon Steel Coil Weight per Meter (kg/m)
For quick estimation: Weight per meter = Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 7.85. Common width: 1,250 mm (1.25 m).
| Thickness (mm) | kg/m (width 1000mm) | kg/m (width 1250mm) | kg/m (width 1500mm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 3.93 | 4.91 | 5.89 |
| 1.0 | 7.85 | 9.81 | 11.78 |
| 1.5 | 11.78 | 14.72 | 17.66 |
| 2.0 | 15.70 | 19.63 | 23.55 |
| 3.0 | 23.55 | 29.44 | 35.33 |
| 4.0 | 31.40 | 39.25 | 47.10 |
| 5.0 | 39.25 | 49.06 | 58.88 |
| 6.0 | 47.10 | 58.88 | 70.65 |
| 8.0 | 62.80 | 78.50 | 94.20 |
